Depressurizing and pressurizing your fuel system? (details inside)?

I'm going to change the fuel filter on my aunts 1991 lumina. The problem is i'm not sure on how to depressurize and pressurize the fuel system. I'm looking to change the fuel filter. I've changed a fuel filter once on a 95 chevy blazer with a little help of my friend.

I'm only 16 and im SUPER good at working on cars. I know what to do and all that. I've been changing brakes and brake pads and all that work off and. Ever since i was 6 years old, i changed my first tire lol.

What if i dont depressureize and pressurize the fuel system? Will the car blow up? My aunt might give me the car since im getting my permit next summer.

Reason im doing this is because itll stall when you let off the gas, and i maybe figure its the fuel filter because she said it hasnt been tuned up in 4-8 years. And its been sitting there 3 years without being driven. It runs great, its just that damn stalling.Depressurizing and pressurizing your fuel system? (details inside)? The safest way to depresurize is to remove the fuel pump fuse, then crank the engine about 5 revolutions. This could cause the check engine light to come on and you'd have to get it reset later. Some shops will reset for free. No the car won't blow up if you don't depresurize, but fuel could spray everywhere when you remove the filter if the lines are pressurized. If you have a ingnition source around, then it could blow up. If the engine is running rough as if a cylinder is not firing, check the spark plugs and wires as well.

Rotor Question-PLEASE HELP!?

I've basically worn my brake pads down to the bone; my car makes a pretty loud grinding noise everytime I brake, although I haven't noticed any %26quot;spongy%26quot; feeling in the brake pedal or shaking in the wheel. I don't even have to press the brake pedal all the way to the floor when I brake.

I know I need new brake pads, and my dad insisted that I needed new rotors too due to the metal-on-metal grinding, but I just looked at the rotors and they look pretty good! There is some rusting on the outside edges and in a few other patches, but no deep grooves. The rotors kind of look like records-you know, those strange old things that grandmas and grandpas used to listen to. I couldn't check their thickness, but I've never had these ones machined before, so I think they should be in pretty good shape.

My working knowledge of cars is generally pitiful, but I'm pretty sure that I can figure out how to change my brake pads on my own.

So my questions are

A) Can I change my brake pads myself and leave the rotors as they are without any dire consequences?

B) If I take the car to a mechanic to have the pads changed, do they normally machine the rotors when they change the pads as a part of the service? One place quoted me about $160 to change the brake pads, but I forgot to ask if machining is included and now its too late to call back.

C) Can I save money if I just change my own pads, then take the rotors to a mechanic to machine? If so, what would the general cost be for my two front rotors?

Also, I drive a '98 Ford Explorer, 2WD (I'm pretty sure its rear-wheel).

Thanks for any input!Rotor Question-PLEASE HELP!?It's dire because none of us can measure or inspect the rotors. The rotor friction contact surfaces must be flat and parallel and measure above the discard thickness. Any auto-parts can tell you what the minimum allowable thickness is. You can measure the thickness with a 0-1 micrometer or a vernier caliper. Prepare to be hozed if they want to sell you rotors. Inquire how much they are and where they were made. Off-shore brake rotors can be purchased at any auto parts-store for less than $35.00. Thy are made of terrible quality of cast iron. This is a wake-up call cause chain brake shops, private mechanics and new car dealerships install these cheap rotors and charge you premium prices for what you could by the best brands for.Rotor Question-PLEASE HELP!?Whenever u do brakes u should either cut the rotors or heave then replaced the pads need a new surface to wear into or else the won't last Long and since it's an explorer it would be cheaper to just replace them I charge45 to cut when neW ones are only 25 eachRotor Question-PLEASE HELP!?Ok, here's what I would do. Yes, you can change them yourself. Get your pads from Kragen's/Checker/Schuukcs(my favorite). Most of the do rotor and drum machining for something like $10. Buy the lifetime pads they sell for like $30. Have them show you as they measure the rotor thickness if they tell you that you need new ones. The %26quot;record grooving%26quot; you mention could go either way as faras needing new rotors. Some brand new rotors do not come factory thick enough to be machined even once. It all depends on the mfgr. And, it being a 98, how many brake jobs were done prior to now?Rotor Question-PLEASE HELP!?yes it is rwd or 4 WD

i just replaced rotors on the same basic truck

the rotors can be had for around $30 a piece

call your local parts store (pep boys ,murrays, ETC)

there are 2 bolts that hold the brake caliber to the rotor get the proper tool at the same time

it takes about 45 min with simple hand tools

save yourself a few bux and buy a chiltons book and fix it yourself its really not so hard

you will also need a C clamp to compress the caliber once you have it apart

i am believeing there will be visable wear on the inside of the rotor

hope this helpsRotor Question-PLEASE HELP!?A) you could do it yourself with a little bit of knowledge, but your rotors DEFINANTLY need replacing, rotors are suppose to be smooth, not grooved like records

B) if the rotors are still withing spec, they can be machined down, but if you ground them under their specs, they'll need to be replaced. if they're charinging $160, they should be machining the rotors then, or else that's just a very expensive pad replacement

C) like i said, you can do it yourself, but there's a lot of things that could go wrong, i would recommend you take it to a mechanic. they'll have all the tools for the job, so you dont have to go out and buy extra stuff that you probably wont use ever again just for one job

and it is a RWD car ;)Rotor Question-PLEASE HELP!?If brake rotors look like records you will wear you new pads out pematurely. The thickness of the rotor wether it looks good or not is going to make or break wether or not they can be machined.

If you take them to a decent shop/mechanic they won't turn them unless they measure above spec.

$160 to change pads sounds like includes machine work if applicable.

Do i need new brake rotors?

recently i started hearing a squeaking noise from the front passenger side of my car. kinda hard to explain but its a squeak squeak squeak like in a rhythm. when i speed up the rhythm speeds up and when i slow down it also slows down. so i figured it was my rotors but asked a friend just to be sure and he said to try changing my brake pads first. so i changed them and it helped for about a week and how they are squeaking again and alot worse than before and kind of embarrassing to say the least. before i bought some rotors, i just wanted your opinions. thanks for any help. oh i dont know if it matters but it is on a 1999 chevy malibu. thanks.Do i need new brake rotors?it could be u caused brake fade and the pads are glazed over.are they semi metallic is do maybe u didn't break them inDo i need new brake rotors?Your brakes pads were changed. A squeak squeak squeak would indicate a warped rotor:

1. Buy brand new rotors if they are inexpensive. Rotors can be as low as $20ish and above $200.

2. Have a shop %26quot;turn%26quot; your rotors which means grinding them down so that they are perfectly flat. This is usually included if you have a %26quot;break job%26quot; done on your car. Or take the rotors off yourself and carry them into a machine shop that grinds rotors.Do i need new brake rotors?Go to a auto part store and buy disc brake quite either blue or red and follow the directions.

2004 Nissan Maxima - ABS, SLIP, VDC OFF and BRAKE lights are on.?

I bought this car about a year ago 2004 Maxima SL. It only has 34000 Miles on it, About a month ago it started showing all of this lights, it use to happen only once in a while but now its everytime. The ABS, SLIP, VDC OFF and BRAKE lights come on when I start driving. The lights do not come on right away but rather when I start driving the car, First the SLIP light comes on and the transmission starts to slip but after all four lights come on, I can drive just fine without have to worry about transmission slipping... Now all of this started happening after I changed my Brake Pads and Balanced and Rotated the tires at a local Auto Shop. Can Anyone tell me what is wrong with the car or how can I reset all the warning lights? I would appreciate all the inputs...2004 Nissan Maxima - ABS, SLIP, VDC OFF and BRAKE lights are on.?Problem happens right after brake service and tire rotate/balance?

The problem may be at wheel speed sensor(s). You really need to have a tech reading trouble code first then go from there.

Many shops will be able to read and reset engine, transmission, ABS trouble code with their scan tool.2004 Nissan Maxima - ABS, SLIP, VDC OFF and BRAKE lights are on.?All of the above are Anti lock brake related items. You know acronyms SLIP= Traction Control VDC= Vehicle Dynamic Control AND ABS = antilock brakes. Now did any thing change a month ago when you maby put on two different size tires rims? Brake Systems problems need to be checked at the Nissan Dealer because the information is only available there to diagnosis and correctly repair the car. Just might be one bad wheel speed sensor. Or rodents chewing on the car's wiring. Get it looked at soon! good luck2004 Nissan Maxima - ABS, SLIP, VDC OFF and BRAKE lights are on.?I recommend letting the Nissan dealer hook up the Consult scan tool.Could need reprogramming or there may be a real problem with a sensor or part...don't take chances with brakes.Good luck

I need Car Tuner help?

I have a 2008 ford fusion and i plan on changing a number of things on the car, first i will start with H%26amp;R coilovers, then change my brake rotors along with the brake pads. Then i will be installing a rear and front sway bars and also a new 3d Carbon body kit, and i will be installing a front wind splitter from ADR design. Last but not least a SCT cailbrator and new air intake, along with a new set of Vossen wheels 20 inches, my question and problem....possibly, are the wheels, they weight 30 pounds and im worried they are gona to offset the work im doing to the car. The current 16 inch wheels on my car weight in at 22 pounds, finally my question is does anyone know if the wheels are really going to bring down my performance? If so how bad? by the way i have a i4 engine, 2.3 L. I dont wana spend money on forged wheels, but any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks AllI need Car Tuner help?Someone has been watching too many Fast and Furious movies.

All the mods that you are choosing to do are not going to make the car any faster. It is all for looks. Let me break it down for you.

The coilovers, rotors and sway bars will make the car handle better, but it will not make it any faster.

The windsplitter will not do anything to help you unless you are going over 120mph, which I bet is the top speed of that car anyway. So that thing is useless.

The cold air intake and SCT Tune might....MIGHT.... give you 15-20 horsepower. Maybe.

The carbon fiber body kit is not going to do anything but piss you off. Aftermarket body kits never fit the car properly and break very easily.

Now to the rims. Good luck getting 20 inch rims to fit on the car with coilovers. 20s are the biggest wheels that will fit on that car. However, if you put coil overs on then you will certainly end up lowering the car. If you do that, then you will not be able to fit the 20s on there unless you set the ride height of the car back to stock thus defeating the purpose of all the suspension mods that you did.

Will the wheels hurt your performance...yes. The added weight will slow the car down....slightly. You won't be able to feel it. It will be the equivalent to losing about 3 horsepower. Those big wheels will also make the car handle worse and will offset all the suspension modifications you did. I would not go with anything bigger than an 18 inch rim.I need Car Tuner help? All that on a fusion?

Parking Brake issue on a 2004 Ford Explorer?

I just changed the front brake pads on my moms 2004 Ford Explorer... no problems, tightened everything back up... pumped the brakes and whatnot. All good. i jacked up the rear driver side wheel, removed the wheel, took out the two mounting bolts on the back of the caliper but did not move the caliper because I couldn't figure out how. Anyway, i put the bolts back in and remounted the wheel. Again, all good. Or so i thought. I went to Ops check it through our development. When I started the car, i noticed that the ABS light was on. I let that go for the moment because the brakes were working but i was weary. I got out of the driveway and drove around, driving and stopping, driving and stopping... got back into the driveway, all good. Pulled up to the parking spot, put it in park and applied the parking brake. There was almost no resistance on the pedal. I was like, wtf? so, i pressed the pedal in, put my foot on the brake, put the car in neutral and even with the parking brake %26quot;engaged,%26quot; it drifted backwards, and it was working before. I'm clueless as to what's wrong. • 2000 Grand Am Brake Issues Spongy?!?

I recently had the front rotors and pads on a 2000 Grand am SE. when I went to pump the brakes with the car off, the pedal became firm, then when I turned the car on, the pedal became spongy and unresponsive. Took it back to the mechanic a few days later, they said they would bleed the brakes, yet the pedal is still spongy, Master cylinder is fine, worked perfectly before the pads/rotors change. Could this be perhaps that they did not do a full system brake bleed?? PLEASE help, winter is coming and i want to have good brakes for the snow!! I heard maybe the brake pads just need to be worn in, if this is true, how long will it take for my brakes to go back to normal? Also wondering how much it could cost if i take it to someone to bleed the entire system and do nothing else? thanks2000 Grand Am Brake Issues Spongy?!?Wow, I'm seeing some really incorrect information in the answers to this question.

The brake hydraulics are separate from the brake friction materials. The hydraulics must never have any type of air introduced into their system or a spongy or poor pedal, if any at all, may result. However, the only required disturbance to the hydraulic system when replacing pads is to retract the pistons back into the caliper to allow for the thickness of the new brake pads. This does not require opening the bleeder valve or disconnecting any hydraulics at all. So, stating that the system must be bled when replacing pads is incorrect. The only reason for it to be bled is because the system was opened and may have possibly allowed air to enter. So, if the shop removed the caliper from the brake hose or opened the bleeder valve, then they should be bled. Otherwise, it is not a requirement.

Next we go to the power booster. The booster uses engine vacuum to give an easier pedal to push. If the booster is bad, or if the vacuum line to it from the engine is bad or has a problem, it will definitely not give you a spongy pedal, it will give a very stiff and hard pedal, just like you felt when you push the pedal down a couple of times with the engine off. You lose the assist, therefore resulting in a hard pedal, not a spongy pedal.

New brakes may often feel different from the ones replaced. Correctly stated by Thomas E., the new pads need to %26quot;burnish%26quot; or seat themselves to the rotors. Once this has happened, the feel of the pedal normally improves. While the new pads and rotors are mating their surfaces, you must push the brake pedal harder to achieve the same friction on the parts as you use to, and the pedal feels spongier. I do disagree that the extra 10mm gives springiness or sponginess. Pads are very hard and do not %26quot;give%26quot; or compress at all.

Another thing to look at is the adjustment of the rear drum brake shoes. Although they may not have been touched by this shop, the combination of the rear brakes being out of adjustment and the new friction parts still breaking in may be giving you the sponginess you are feeling. When the shoes are out of adjustment, the brake pedal must move further to engage the rear brake shoes based off the combination valve regulating pressure to the front brakes before the rear brakes are engaged.

I have found success on the midsize GM vehicles with 4wheel ABS by cycling the ABS pump valves and solenoids and using the proper full system bleed procedure, not just a quick bleed at the wheels. Cycling the solenoids and valves requires a scanner capable of accessing and performing these functions. The dealer and a quality repair shop will have this scanner, but expect to pay $100 or so for this complete system bleeding service due to the complexity and tools required.

I didnt want to confuse you before when talking about opening the hydraulic system when doing a brake job. Although it is not necessary or required to do this or bleed the system when done, it is highly recommended to incorporate a specific method for retracting the pistons into the calipers that requires opening the bleeder valve on the caliper as the pistons are retracted. This allows the old dirty brake fluid to exit the system instead of being forced back up the lines against any check valves or where moisture in the fluid can corrode expensive ABS components. Since you should change your brake fluid every couple years anyway, this would be any ideal time to do this. Read the article at diynetwork, it shows pictures and states my opinion eloquently.

A good mechanic may still have to go through a full inspection and various types of bleeding operations including using the scan tool to try to correct this issue. It should not be boiled down to thinking a technician is poor if it takes him more than a half hour to do this. Especially if he did the brake job by the books and is now trying to hunt down what the heck happened and why you are unsatisfied.

By the way, have you heard of ASE Certification? An ASE certified Brake Technician is tested on situations like this and would know that a bad line to the booster would give a hard pedal, not a soft pedal, and would also be tested on knowing that some vehicles may have to have their pumps cycled. Find out if your shop is using an ASE certified brake technician. Experience doesnt count if it is bad experience.2000 Grand Am Brake Issues Spongy?!?If pads and rotors were all that was done on the front then there's no need to bleed the system, if they took calipers off then a bleed would be needed. I'd take it back to them and advise they diagnose the system correctly.2000 Grand Am Brake Issues Spongy?!?Bring it back to the same shop since they're the ones that did the job. They may hook you up for free since you're unhappy with their service. You don't need to bleed out the entire system though, just bleed out any air that may be trapped. Most of the time, a correctly done brake job needs no bleeding at all, if only doing the rotors and pads.2000 Grand Am Brake Issues Spongy?!?When you pump the brakes %26quot;with the car off%26quot; all the vacuum power assist is used up after about 3 pumps. that is why the pedal got hard because there is no more power assist. it is normal for new brakes to feel more flexible than worn out brakes. you have an extra 10 mm of pad material that will compress some. also the pads may not be bedded to the discs yet adding a little more springiness to the system. most disc and pad changes won't even require bleeding the brakes. if no air is introduced into the system there should be no reason to bleed the brakes. Usually (?) the mechanic should just suck some fluid out of the reservoir and then pry back the pistons which pushes fluid back into the master cylinder reservoir. you don't say if it STOPS ok. if it stops ok - drive it several 100 miles and i think the pedal will start to feel firmer.2000 Grand Am Brake Issues Spongy?!?When I replace brake pads I pop the top of the reservoir beforehand, and after the new pads are on, I bleed the brakes ALWAYS. It is indeed necessary to bleed the brakes after changing brake pads.

I think there are two possibilities. The first is that the power brake booster is bad (most likely)... that's the thing on the firewall that looks like two serving bowls put lip-to-lip, or less likely the brake system still needs bleeding.

The brake booster uses vacuum from the engine to operate. If the vacuum line to the booster is leaking or the booster developed a leak, then you will certainly notice the exact symptoms you mentioned.

ALSO DO NOT take the car back to those bozos. A REAL mechanic should be able to spot that problem in 30 seconds.

    Mazda Miata brake noise?

I have a 2001 Mazda Miata. I just had my brake pads changed and now they squeal when I stop. I called the service tech today who said he soaked them in anti-squeal compound before putting them on. He suggested stopping hard about 2-3 times in order to wear off the rust on the rotors, which is causing the squeal.

Does this make any sense to anyone? I don't think its the weather, because they squealed in both rain and shine, morning and night, and regardless of how long I've been driving the car.

    Ford Taurus 98 Brake Prob?

I bought my Taurus 3 years ago and it has about 150,000 miles on it. Last November though, I had money problems because of school. Anyway my battery died and had a blown right tire. So I just used my moms car until I could get it around to getting it fixed. I recently fixed it, but when I did my brakes were totally weird. It was pulling way to the right when I stopped and I had to push all the way down it. All the tires are at the corrent PSI so that not it. So I figured I was low on brake fluid so I added some then took it out for a test drive and they were working a little better, but then out of no where they stopped working...luckily I was close to my house going very slow and my emergency brake worked. So my question is did the brake line blow? Or what could it be? I'm not the greatest with cars...but I know how to do basics like change Oil, Brake pads, Filters etc. If it is brake lines or whatever how much would it cost and could I fix it? Since I can't drive it or pay for laborFord Taurus 98 Brake Prob?Sounds like one of your brake calliper's had seized when it was off the road and when you started driving it again the hydraulic pressure blew the seal causing a brake failureFord Taurus 98 Brake Prob?If you don't have a puddle of brake fluid under your car....I believe, bleeding your brakes will cure your problem.....

If you have a puddle of Brake fluid, repair the leak, replace the part that is leaking and then bleed the system again.

How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?

I bought an 18 month old VW golf in July this year. In the last 5 months it has done 3000 miles. The car was at the garage for something and they have told me my brake pads need replacing as are 95% worn. They are telling me they may have been upto 70% worn when I bought it (they do not have a figure but say if they were worn more than this they would have changed them). So they are saying I have worn my brake pads (front and back) at least 25% in 3000 miles or 5 months. I find this hard to believe and think they were worn when I was sold the car-is there any guidance on how long pads should last and what can I do about this???!!!How quickly do brake pads wear? So the wear is obviously less on the rear when the front is about ready to be swap with a new rotor. If you are mechanically inclined, check your manual for brake rotor thickness, if it is still good maybe you just need to resurface it.How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?Pads wear differently depending on what kind of driving you do.

    City wears faster than highway.

    Average is around 50,000 miles.

I do work for some taxi and delivery drivers, and they need brakes every 20,000 miles.

One note: brakes work fine until they wear all their lining off,

How soon you replace them before that often depends on how motivated you are to do the job.

Someone selling a car will %26quot;let it slide%26quot; as long as there is some lining left. Someone repairing a car will recommend brakes if the lining is getting the least bit thin: brakes are an easy, high profit repair! How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?As a former automotive service shop owner I performed hundreds of brake jobs. I think the key point of your question is that you must find a reliable shop that you trust. Get to know the owner/manager and have all your work done there. That relationship is invaluable. It does no good to second guess advice on repair needs for your car. Unfortunately, some shops will do unnecessary work. Back to brakes: Pad wear is a function of driving type, quality of materials used and workmanship. Also, for rear brakes (pads or shoes) the rule of thumb is that they are replaced once for every two sets on the front. This is because weight transfer to the front of the car when braking causes the front pads to wear more quickly. For newer cars, such as yours, the original pads are the highest quality and good for a long time. For an easy driver who does long distance highway commutes, 70K or 80K for front pads is not unusual. City commute driving could yield 40K to 50K (these are typical numbers). Also all pads have a wear specification. The shop must know and state this. I think VW uses 1 millimeter (mm) as the wear limit. The shop should measure and state the remaining pad thickness (note: pads typically do not wear completely even, the measurement is taken from the thinnest section). Even though your post does not state the car mileage when purchased (some folks wrote that it now has 30K, but they are not careful readers), it reads like under 20K miles. It is unlikely that the OEM front brake pads would be worn out in that time, however it is possible. But there is no way the rear are also worn, for reasons stated above. My guess is that this shop is not playing straight. As another poster stated, there is a wide range of brake pad quality. When required, spend the money for the best to insure long life and quiet braking. I guess that Golf front pads are about $60. There may also be brake hardware kit. Hope that helps, Marc. How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?The rate of wear depends on how much you ride the brake. No one wants to ever risk brakes problems or failing.. so are prepared to pay if the stealers (dealers) say they need changing. However I've known many instances where the stealers have been taking the p1ss, and brakes loads of life left.. sometimes as much as 90% life left in them.

Take you car to a specialist (I use Awesome GTi in Manchester).... they are cheaper, have professional time served mechanics working on your car (not a spotty trainee)... lower costs (lower overheads).

In the short term.... I'd get them double checked by another firm.

Also ask your garage to put their recommendations in writing before starting the work - if they are reluctant to do so it tells you something.... and if they do and prove to have not been honest in their assessment.. I'd inform local trading standards agency and tell them your taking it to the press.

How was it driven? city mostly or highway mostly?

How they wear depends on your driving conditions. A lot of stop and go in the city vs. highway miles. Also depends on the pads themselves! Hard pads vs soft pads. Soft pads wear faster.

I change my pads every six months. Once a year I change my disc. But I have really hard driving conditions. All lot of driving on sandy, gravel, iron ore gravel, roads when dry. When raining same roads will be flooded up to hubs a lot of times. That wears out brakes quick.

Also have to remove self adjusters due to freezing up because of oxidizing from running in muddy water for extended distances. How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?The brake shop would have little knowledge as to how much break pads existed when you purchased the car unless they looked at it. Brakes ware differently depending on weather, road conditions, use, and type of car. I have a large SUV that consumes front brake pads every 20,000 miles, while I have another car that can go 75,000 plus.

The best thing to do is check the pads for a small tab that indicates how much brake pad is left, and when they change the pads, as for the old ones so you can see how much pad is left. Any good shop would be willing to show you how to read a break pad. A bad shop that is going to rip you off will hid them.

If you hear a scraping sound when you drive, it may be an indication of a brake pad that has worn out.How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?If you are concerned, get a second opinion on the issue.

The most difficult thing to do is finding a reputable mechanic/garage.

Brakes are an easy and often targeted up-sell in a garage.

Brakes are considered a %26quot;consumable%26quot; so it's possible the materials originally used for the brake fabric were not meant to last much longer than the miles you currently have.

Or, the previous owner might have driven the car hard -- jack rabbit starts/stops.

Consumables are the replacement parts which are expected to be worn-out/replace by the user -- therefore not reflecting badly on the car manufacturer.

Your vehicle is near 2 years old, might now be a good opportunity to shop for price on a brake repair.

Find a good price, take it in, and ask if the brake pads require changing (your second opinion).

Your repair cost will be greater if the pads do wear out, and you get steel on steel wear -- rotor replacement will be required. How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?You do not say how many miles the car had done before you purchaced it! Brake pads can wear at differnt rates depending on if it is an automatic or manual, also type of driving ie town or motorway and also on the persons driving style. If it is the same garage who sold you the car is saying that within 3000 miles you have worn out the pads that is unfair and they should look at meeting some of the cost of new pads. Rule of thumb pads should last 15 to 20 k.How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?The amount of wear on brake pads depends on how often the car is used. If you drive long distance every day, they will wear quicker than someone who drives locally. Go to the garage and ask to see the worn brake pads. There is not a lot you can do about this though because you don't know how worn they were when you bought the car.How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?I have a 2005 Jetta GLi I bought new. I just had it in for a checkup, and they checked the brakes. The dealership reported the front had 90% life remaining after 15,000 miles and the rear were barely worn. I have heard anything from 30,000 miles for the front and 90,000 for the back to almost double that.

If the previous owner was really hard on the brakes or for some reason had poor quality pads installed, they will wear faster. If you have lost that much pad in 3000 miles, there is a serious problem with the brake system. If the brakes are worn almost out after less than 20,000 miles, I would make a warranty claim and get at least partial coverage. How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?It depends on how you drive and the type of pads that were last installed. I have gone through a set of pads in a matter of a few months simply because I was driving around with more people in my car and driving through the city. So the excess weight as well as the constant stopping has caused my brakes to wear much faster.

Secondly there is no telling how rough the previous owner was on the car and how much pad was left. Some people drive %26quot;two-footed%26quot; which causes the brakes to be slightly engaged even though the driver may not be aware that he has his foot on the brake and the gas at the same time.

Third, if the car was 18 months old when you bought it and then you drove it another 5 months, that's almost 2 years which is about average for needing a brake job. Unless the brakes were covered by a warranty you just have to bite the bullet and get the work done or roll up your sleeves and put on the pads yourself. They are relatively easy to do on a VW.How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?This scenario sounds totally possible. We're only talking about 25% since your purchase, and you have driven 5 months. It also sounds like the pads were never replaced by the original owner (since the vehicle is 18 months old and 70% wear- which sounds right).

The dealership should have replaced them before you bought the VW. I wouldn't buy a 70% used soda.....that means I only have 30% left for me!

If I were you, I would go back and talk to my salesman, and let him know what you've found. They should offer to replace them. I would start there first, because they knew they should have replaced them, but like all shady car sales people, they want to get the most money with the least amount of work.

Sounds like you may have been duped, but not by the repair shop. The dealership is the real culprit. How quickly do brake pads wear? -Driver usage

    -Quality of Brake Pads

One way to tell if your brake pads are worn is you hear that %26quot;screeching%26quot; noise everytime you brake. That is usually metal grinding on metal.

Of course, the only way to find out if you're being ripped off or not is to look at it yourself.

Jack your car up, use air-tools to take the wheel off, then examine your brakes, if you can't do that, then you should be able to see through the gaps of your rims and see the thickness left in them.

Brake pads last on average 6-12 months depending on quality and driver. I have ceramic brakes on my SUV and they're still good from last year.

The Garage was being nice checking your brakes for you. I don't think they're ripping you off. If it's due, then it's due a change. How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?this sounds like reasonable wear. wear depends on your driving and braking style, the quality of the pads, and the weight of your car. I would go through pads every 7000 miles in my Cadillac mostly because i used the cheap *** $20 pads and I drive the car fast (which means I brake hard). You did not own the car for 18 months of it's life, how do you know how it was driven? If I had a lease, I'd drive the sh*t out of the car since I didn't have to keep it.How quickly do brake pads wear? I think I am being conned!!!?It really depends on several things

    1. The quality of the pads installed last time

    2. The quality of the brake system in comparison to the weight of the car, and

    3. Your driving habits.

My vehicle has a brake system designed for a car 300 lbs lighter, so the brake pads run out pretty often. But if I replace them with cheap pads from the local auto parts store, I barely get 6 months out of them.

How much do front brake pads & rotors cost on a 2000 Toyota Camry LE.?

    Hello,

Yesterday my car started grinding when I was braking... I knew my pads were low and I drove on it for about a day. The grinding got worse as I knew there was no pad left and it was now metal on metal. I took my car into Speedy Auto and got it checked out. They showed me bare brake pads and grooves in my rotors from the grinding. They said the rotors had hot spots on them and wouldn't be able to be machined.... that they would have to change the rotors altogether. So I went ahead with the procedure and the bill turned out to be $341.00 for front brake pads and rotors. Is this a normal price for a procedure like this? Or did I get ripped off a bit here?

    Thanks for your time,

MitchHow much do front brake pads %26amp; rotors cost on a 2000 Toyota Camry LE.?That is a fair price. Could you have gotten it done at some hillbilly shop cheaper, of course. Speedy is national chain shop and you got a good warranty. How much do front brake pads %26amp; rotors cost on a 2000 Toyota Camry LE.?That is a fairly reasonable price. Depending on where in the country you are, and how good of quality parts they used. A repair like that on a Toyota should be between $275-400 depending on the parts used. Your right in the middle, so not bad. At the dealer we get around $425 for Toyota original parts. They most likely used aftermarket parts thus the discount. Doesn't mean the parts are any less quality though as some aftermarket brakes are better then the factory ones. How much do front brake pads %26amp; rotors cost on a 2000 Toyota Camry LE.?they got you a little bit on this one, normal cost on doing that one should have been around 250 bucks total, but you paid their cost on the mark up for the parts also so that's about right for a shop, they mark the parts up ,but it could have been done a lot cheaper than this, considering replacing everything was lot easier of a job, good luck. How much do front brake pads %26amp; rotors cost on a 2000 Toyota Camry LE.?over half the cost was labor, parts probably didn't cost them much over $120.How much do front brake pads %26amp; rotors cost on a 2000 Toyota Camry LE.?yes id have to agree, you got the typical markup for getting it done at a shop they usually can double the price for parts at the minimum. when doing my own Camry i get large box sets of pads that would work out to be 15-20 dollars to put pads on the front tires. but just buying them for two wheels can be 25-40 depending on name brand or just like the general Napa brand which is fine. the rotors range from 40-60 for each all purpose rotor. that's why its a good idea to change or at least check the brakes when they start to squeal. that's the wear bar rubbing on the rotor to let you know. you normally don't want to let the pads get any more worn down than having 1/16th inch left of pad. they are very simple to change just get a manual online for ten bucks. takes about 15 min a wheel and save you hundreds of dollars.

How to maintain a High Mileage Car?

I drive a 1999 Chevy Malibu with 177,000 miles on it and its been a great car for me since i got it with about 173,000. Nothing wrong with it now, i put new brake pads, new calipers on both sides, change the oil not too long ago and I'm wondering if there's anything else i should worry about or plan ahead to get something done so this car can last me a lot longer. Should i be worrying about the engine or transmission now with the high mileage if nothing has been occurring? How to maintain a High Mileage Car?With so many miles on the car, you should have taken it to a mechanic and have it checked out. Would have cost about $50.00. Since you didn't do this, there are a couple things you can do to check the engine and transmission.

Get a compression guage and remove your spark plugs. Screw in the compression guage to each cylinder. Crank the engine about 5 revolutions to obtain the highest reading and write it down. While you are checking each cylinder, pay attention as to whether the compression slowly drops. If so you have a compression leak in that cylinder, which could be caused by many things. If the compression slowly drops, get an oil can and squirt some oil in that cylinder and then take another reading. If the compression does NOT decrease as before, then it is caused by bad rings. The oil you squirt in will seal around the rings for a short period so as to check it. Or if you have low compression and it increases after you squirt in oil, that also will be your rings.

If the compression still drops after squirting in oil, then it is cause by a leaking valve. Of course this is taking into consideration that you do not have a warped head or blown head gasket.

Also, once you take a compression check of each cylinder, the highest reading of a cylinder and the lowest reading of another cylinder should be within 15% of each other. If more, then you need engine work.

As for your transmission, pull out the dip stick when the engine is hot. The color of the fluid should be red. If it is not red and has a %26quot;burnt%26quot; smell, then you may need transmission work. However, change the transmission fluid and filter.

NOTE: Never remove spark plugs on a car with aluminum heads when the engine is hot. You can tear up the threads that way.

The spark plugs can tell you a lot about the engine. When you remove the plugs, check them for fouling by oil. Your plug firing tip should be a light brown.

To be safe, I would have also changed the plugs and spark plug wires. A lot of people not in the know, believe that you can take a plug right out of the box and put it in. Gap them according to specs before putting them in.How to maintain a High Mileage Car?Joe's got good advice. If your engine is going, and the car is still good, a used engine can cost less than $1000 if you can do your own work.

Take care of a high miler, and it will keep running. If the timing belt hasn't been changed, install a new one, replace old belts and filters, keep a close eye on CV shaft boots, and fix little things as they crop up instaed of waiting for big failures.

I drive high mileage cars, and have had good luck with them. Repairs are cheaper than payments, they cost less to register, and you can get a car with more options than you could afford new.How to maintain a High Mileage Car?The best proactive measures you can do is scheduled oil/fluid changes, you say you took it over with 173,000 on it? When was the transmission fluid last changed, you need to track all this in a maintenance log.How to maintain a High Mileage Car?Just keep oil changed.

    Help with car brakes?

This happens is when it's cold outside usually. When I put the brake on, instead of the car stopping smoothly it stops abruptly making the entire car jolt almost. I definitely jolt in my seat. It'll keep doing that until the car is fully warm. Even afterwards I hear the back brakes almost like they're dragging? I don't know if that's the word. I'll step on the brakes slowly and I'll hear the back brakes making this weird noise. The only way I can explain is you know when you're on a bike on a gravel road and you put the brakes on but the bike sometimes still skids on the gravel...that's what it sounds and feels like but the car stops no problem. • How long should brake pads last on a Pontiac Sunfire?

My front brake pads were replaced about 30,000 miles ago. I took my car in for an oil change and basic inspection at an auto shop, and they said that the front pads are 80% worn, and the rotors are grooved, and the front pads and rotors all need to be replaced. They are estimating $250 total for this repair. This seems too soon for them to be so worn since I do mostly highway driving and I'm light on the brakes. The brake pads are not making any noise yet. If the pads and rotors are indeed this damaged, shouldn't my brakes be making an awful noise? How long should brake pads last on a Pontiac Sunfire?30,000 miles is excellent for a front wheel drive car. My best advice is to have another shop take a look and give you an estimate. If you aren't feeling anything wrong with the brakes it doesn't mean the pads can't be worn. But you may not need to buy new rotors. How long should brake pads last on a Pontiac Sunfire?minumum 1 yearHow long should brake pads last on a Pontiac Sunfire?I have a Sunfire too and mine lasted a lot longer...I highly recommend getting a second opinion. I did and it turned out that what one mechanic told me didn't need to be done. Saved me a lot of money. How long should brake pads last on a Pontiac Sunfire?Noise isn't usual until damage has been done.

It does seem a little short on mileage, but it depends on the quality of the last pads installed. If you had a %26quot;budget%26quot; or %26quot;Special%26quot; brake service, they may indeed be due.

Locate a quality ASE Certified shop and ask for an inspection and estimate. You may be charged, but they may waive the cost of the inspection if you contract with the shop for work. How long should brake pads last on a Pontiac Sunfire? You state your brake pads were replaced 30k ago, my question is did they also replaced the brake rotors? If they did not than you may indeed need to replaced both the brake pads and rotors after 30k miles. It also depends on what type of brakes parts they installed and how many miles are on the rest of the brake parts. You will also use up your front pads if your rear brakes are not adjusted right. How long should brake pads last on a Pontiac Sunfire?Depend only on YOUR driving habits. But 30,000 miles is pretty close. They will not make noise if sensors are not touching yet. $ 250.00 is damn cheap for rotors, pads and labor. How long should brake pads last on a Pontiac Sunfire?First of all your brake pads on front will wear out about 3-4 times as fast.

Now 30K doesn't sound the worst, - it depends on how much you use the brakes, and how fast you try to stop! Mine last a whole lot longer, but I let friction and air perssure slow down the car a lot before I apply brakes, and I also use the gears on (my) std. trans car. My wifes is an automatic, and she gets even better miles on hers, because she doesn't push her car as hard as I do mine , and she usually drives like she has all day to go places! She drives with traffic ok,- but maintains about 8 car lengths between her and others, so she uses brakes very sparingly!

$250 sounds pretty steep, -- I think %26quot;Brake Check%26quot; advertises $59.95 per axle (extra parts on top of course). An %26quot;axle%26quot; is both wheels on one end!

Have any mechanical aptitude? Learn how to do them yourself! The pads cost from about $18 - $30 depending on what kind of %26quot;brake performance%26quot; you are looking for. Obviously the %26quot;high performance%26quot; ones are going to cost a lot more! In normal use they usually last a whole lot longer, - because you don't really need these %26quot;heavy duty%26quot; brakes for normal driving! As far as the %26quot;groves%26quot; go, - if they aren't causing any propblems now, - they won't cause any problems later! This means that they just aren't %26quot;like new%26quot;. If the brakes don't %26quot;chatter%26quot; or %26quot;pulsate%26quot; the brake pedal - I woudln't worry about it! The new pads will wear a little faster till they are %26quot;seated%26quot; in a %26quot;wear pattern%26quot;, - after which they will wear

at normal rate! --- Acutally if you think about it, the area of braking contact on pads is slightly increased, - (crumple a piece of paper and see how much less area it covers) it still has the same outside area as before! So if you could smooth the disk out, it would be bigger in diameter (or larger braking area)!

You can probably put new pads on in an hour or less! This of course depends on whether you have worn them down till the backing pads are grinding on disks! If all the parts are good otherwise, I can probably put them on in a half hour or less!

Go to an %26quot;AutoZone type%26quot; store and buy a %26quot;Haynes Auto Repair Manual%26quot;, and it has all the information on how to do the job. This will cost you less than $20. It is a complerte maintainance manual, and shows you how to do just about anything on car,-- if you want to do it yourself! How long should brake pads last on a Pontiac Sunfire?Your brake pads should have what is called a wear indicator, which is a clip that is attached to the brake pad, which upon wear, comes into contact with the rotor, making a loud, screeching noise. This noise is an indication that the pads need to be replaced. With this said, the wear of the brake pads can fluctuate, depending on several factors: 1) Your driving style. Alot of heavy braking can cause premature wear of the pads. 2) the type of material that your brake pads are made of. Organic pads tend to wear faster, where semi-metallic pads create fast stopping, but wear quickly, tend to damage the rotors over the course of time, and emit a black dust that you will quickly notice on your front wheels. Ceramic pads offer the best of both worlds, they are %26quot;quiet%26quot; and have little dust, and cause less wear to the rotors. I agree, with an earlier response, I would take the car to a reputable mechanic, and have them inspected. Many dealerships and service centers offer a free brake inspection, I would also ask to be present when the inspection is conducted. If they will not allow you to watch and ask questions, politely leave and don't look back. If they do welcome your presence and questions, look for excessive dust, and determine if the wear indicator clip, at the bottom, is even with the friction material on the brake pad. (Note: the caliper in which the pads are installed may be rusted and dirty. This is common, and in no way affects your quality of braking) Most mechanics are honest, but a few assume that you don't know the difference and are looking to sell you a set of pads, at a high labor rate. Being informed is the best savings and safety option that you can take with you when having work performed on your vehicle. I wish you the best.

    Brake pads+rotors+calipers?

Hi, I went to my car dealership today to get oil change %26amp; tire inspection and they said I need new brake pads, both front and rear (5mm left? how bad is that? they said it's fine now but I should get it at my next maintenence service)

I said why, I just replaced (or re-surfaced? don't remember...) my brake rotors and calipers about a year ago (at Firestone) and they said the mechanics who did it last year should've really done rotors, calipers and brake pads all together at the same time, not separate. And that it's kind of a wast of money when you do it (separately) like that.

Is it true that pads, rotors, calipers %26quot;must%26quot; be done simultaneously? Is it the fact that I only did rotors/calipers that caused my brake pads worn out so quick?

They're saying I'll need about $800 to get all three done (along with some other little stuff to make my brakes fine) Is this reasonable?

I understand dealership might rob you like crazy sometimes and it's not the best place to go but I kind of like this particular location dealership they've been pretty honest according to my past experience. Even today, I told them to let me know if I need to get new tires and they said it's perfectly fine even though I have over 52000 mile on it and never replaced any one before (is this normal? seems like they last forever! I thought you replace it every two year or so...)

I also asked to get tire rotation but they said it's not needed at this point. even though I got it at pretty much all my oil change services (every 5000 mile)?

I drive Scion tc 2006, any feedback would be greatly appreciated~

Thanks all for reading this super long question ;)Brake pads+rotors+calipers?%26gt; I just replaced (or re-surfaced? don't remember...) my brake rotors and calipers about a year ago (at Firestone) and they said the mechanics who did it last year should've really done rotors, calipers and brake pads all together at the same time, not separate. And that it's kind of a wast of money when you do it (separately) like that.

You can replace the brakes FEW times before resurfacing the rotors (I do this all the time). But most of the time, if you are going to resurface the rotor, they always replace the brakes. That way the NEW rotor surface last longer.

    ====

All this is moot. Brakes jobs are VERY standard. There's NO reason to do them at the dealership. Go to ANY garage or brake shop. Even a rank 1st year mechanic can do brakes.

That was the FIRST thing I learned to do.

    ====

Also since the rotors were resurfaced before you PROBABLY don't need to do it again. The dealers are FAMOUS for OVER estimating the problem. They say that they want to COMPLETELY fix a problem (yeah - at your cost !!!! ).

Good luck.......Brake pads+rotors+calipers? You do NOT have to do all three simultaneously, in fact its a waste of money to do so.

Calipers should never go bad and therefore never need to be replaced.

Rotors should only need to be turned if you warped them, either from overheating the brakes or going too long with worn out pads.

Brake pads go a couple years if not abused so you probably dont need them yet. In addition, you change the rear brake pads/shoes only once every other time you change the front ones.

Always bleed the brakes after all services, and thats the only %26quot;other little stuff%26quot; involved. It should only cost about $20.

$800 is quite ridiculousBrake pads+rotors+calipers?if the rotors are not scored then just change the pads calipers only need doing if they leak oil brake pads replace at 1.0mm you may have someone who can help you change your brake pads / pads must be replaced in pairs eg. both front pads , both rear padsBrake pads+rotors+calipers?$800 for a brake job is way too much.

I never go to the %26quot;stealership%26quot; unless I need parts that I can't get from anywhere else.

You don't need to replace pads and rotors simultaneously. I've never heard of anyone resurfacing calipers.

The pads will ware down faster than the rotors. As long as the rotors aren't cracked, warped, or damaged, there really isn't any reason to replace them. (The price difference between resurfacing and buying new rotors are very minimal, so just buy new rotors)

Once you hear a squeaking noise when you apply the brakes, that's when you'll know you need to get new brake pads. (There's a metal bar that comes in contact with the rotor which causes the noise)

Oil changes should be done every 3 months or 3000 - 5000 miles, or which ever comes first.Brake pads+rotors+calipers?Pads need to be replaced. Rotors can be replaced or machined(if they're not too thin). The mechanic can measure it. The calipers just need to be greased, but they really shouldn't charge you much for that if they're changing the pads already. Afterward, they should bleed or flush you brake fluids depending how old it is. The rotors should be good for 2 or 3 sets of pads before replacing. I don't generally have my rotors machine between pad changes, but you can check with your fingers to see if there are any deep grooves.

It's not a difficult job so I recommend you look into aftermarket parts and another shop to do the job. You probably just need the front brakes changed and bleed all 4 brakes. I've used Napa rotors and they work fine for about 1/4 the cost of factory rotors.Brake pads+rotors+calipers?if the rotors were replaced so should have the pads been replaced you never replace rotors with out replacing pads and yes calipers go bad all the time especially dodges ive replaced more stuck dodge calipers than any other brand and if the plenomic piston sticks yes it is very possible that it could/would ruin both rotor and pads but on the other hand its very common to replace just pads so if its 2006 model wouldn't caliper be a warranty issue no i wouldnt pay overpriced dealership pricesbut on the other hand i would expect brakes to last more than a year

hope this helpsBrake pads+rotors+calipers?$800..... NO they are LYING to you... you never have to change the calipers.... new pads wont be much and the rotors shouldne be much either if you are replacing them, if you replace all 4 rotors and new pads it shouldnt be over $300....Brake pads+rotors+calipers?By the book every time you replace brake pads you should resurface or change your brake rotors. If the caliper's aren't bad (as in not seized, leaking and working fine) then they don't need to be replaced but the can and DO go bad. Can you change pads but not resurface your rotors? Yes but they will not perform as well or as long as they would if you did resurface or replace. Remember these are brakes not spark plugs they save your life all day long, they are worth throwing a little extra money at, it's your life and others that rely on it. Plus if there tearing apart the brakes already and you have the money, then it's a very good idea to have them replace the calipers because you will need to one day and you will know you need to, when you press on the brakes and they don't work (worst scenario) or just start to leak. And as for the rotors being under limit in thickness yes that is bad... very bad. That means they are too thin to cool themselves under normal operation, And again these are brakes not spark plugs they are worth the money!

After 8k miles what should be replaced or changed on my car?

i have an 04 civic coupe that i bought with 12000 miles in perfect condition. i have since put on 8k miles as of today and am not sure what i should replace or have looked at. the light is flashing maint requrd once and a while now that i have 8k added on. i know i have to change my oil because the light is on and my gas milage has been severely limited but i was wondering what else i should do to maintain my car and after how many miles i should change the oil and other things such as brake pads and all that. thanks! After 8k miles what should be replaced or changed on my car?Hi, well you use miles and here, we rather use kilometres for servicing(Maintenance schedule). As you mentionned 12000 miles(20 000 Km), I will say that there will be practically no big maintenance schedule for your car on the next 8000 miles(13000Km). It will rather require adjustment/cleaning/replacement concerning:

    1) Oil(Synthetic better) and oil filter to be replaced

    2) spark plugs to be replaced and gapped according to manufacturer's specification after 30 000 Km

    3) Cleaning of air filter--if too dirty replace

    4) Adjustment/check of clearence for your intake/exhaust valves(Does not know whether it is compensated with oil(Automatic adjustment) therefore no adjustment required)

5)Cleck all fluid level(Radiator level(To be renewed each 1 or 2 years...If renewed or not, make sure that your cooling fan starts(Operation to be observed at least 2 times) when your engine is hot and stops when temperature is within it's range) ---brake/clutch level(To be renewed each year if you are in a humid region and each 2 years if you are in dry region)--Power steering level(Inspect fluid level and pipes state)--Battery, electrolyte*** level( ***If it is not a maintenance free one), state and tighteness of cables on terminals(Grease with (vaseline advisable) if too dry---screen washer level (all fluids top up if necessary).

    6) Distributor cap to be cleaned

    7) Belts state(Alternator/powersteering/aircondit?cracks found replaced

    8) Wheels state---Wheel alignement normally to be done each 15000 Km(Depending on your drive style---about each 1 or 2 years)

    9) Brakes state to be inspected(Replaced if worn out)

10)Shaft boots and steering boots to be inspected

11)A look under you car for your exhaust supports state and car body.

12)If paint is scratched some minor parts, do some small touch up to avoid rust. Apply wax on your paint for protection.

    13)Check for wipers state

Well hope that this will give you an idea of the maintenance schedule awaiting for your next 8k miles(13000Km(???)/10 000 Km advisable(6k Miles))..:)After 8k miles what should be replaced or changed on my car?Age is as wearing on a car as mileage. Check your owners manual and do the service that is appropriate to your mileage. When I was a mechanic, I once did an 8,000 mile service on a car that was several years old. The coolant was skunky.

Purely wear items, such as brakes, should not be a problem at 20,000 miles, but it is good to have them checked. Driving styles and terrain can and do effect their wear.

Oil changes are cheap insurance. Again follow the manufacturers recommendations or more often, say every 3,000 miles.

Your gas mileage should not be %26quot;severely limited%26quot; at 20,000 miles. Find out why your mileage has decreased. After 8k miles what should be replaced or changed on my car?Sometines you should only change filters and oil of course the sparkles too and that would be enough but you can also check your brakes and fluids. After 8k miles what should be replaced or changed on my car?I'm not sure what condition the tires were in when you received your car but 8,000 is a good interval to rotate them. After 8k miles what should be replaced or changed on my car?nothing should be replaced on scheduled maint. at 8k. anything mechanical or electrical has a tendency to act up or even break down. take it back were u got it from and have then take a look at it

How do i change my Corsa B Front Brakes?

Im not too brilliant with cars, however i would like to change the brakes on my car. I have a vauxhall Corsa B. Is it easy to do or would you recomment leaving it with the professionals. I have the discs and pads but am unsure how to progress. How do i change my Corsa B Front Brakes? To be honest with you, your brakes are very important and if you need to ask how to replace them, then my advice would be to get them changed at a garage.

Ja.How do i change my Corsa B Front Brakes?easy...you need a wheel brace, axial stand some spanners and allen keys...loosen wheel, jack up and support the car...remove wheel....remove calliper from behind the disc..remove the disc..fit new one but clean with thinners/petrol as there coverd in oil...refit calliper...u need to force the pads apart to push in the pistons of the ccalliper..caliper either comes apart by an allen key bolt from behind or a bolt or 2...once the calliper is split just replace the pads opposite of removal..refit calliper checking all is tight...and your done..replace wheel, drop on the floor and tighten the wheel nuts...do the other side but before moving the car stamp on the brakes till they go sold and your done....a manual will help,i advise buying one.How do i change my Corsa B Front Brakes?jack your car up and secure it so it won,t fall, take the wheel off, take a c-clamp and draw the piston in the caliper in, take 2 bolts out, take the caliper off and change the pads and install the caliper and tighten the bolts, spray it down with brake cleaner and pump up the brakes. How do i change my Corsa B Front Brakes? As above, buy a Haynes manual, it will detail the procedure for changing discs %26amp; pads, with pictures, you'll save the money you've spent on it the first time you use it.How do i change my Corsa B Front Brakes?I JUST LOVE THESE SO CALLED EXPERTS AND TOP CONTRIBUTORS.

    1 NOVICE + 1 HAYNES MANUAL+ I SET OF BRAKE PADS ???

    DANGEROUS BEYOND BELIEF.

THE COST OF THE HAYNES MANUAL WILL BE ABOUT THE SAME AS THE LABOUR CHARGE FOR HAVING THE PADS FITTED BY A GARAGE !!!

WOULD THESE %26quot;EXPERTS%26quot; LET YOU OVERHAUL THEIR GAS BOILER WITH A MANUAL THAT YOU HAVE JUST BOUGHT ??

DOUBT IT DONT YOU ?How do i change my Corsa B Front Brakes?Sorry dude for the way this sounds - BUT..If you have to ask this - don't do it - let somone who knows how to do it, do it for you.How do i change my Corsa B Front Brakes?Really easy. Take wheels off, then take the pads off put the new ones on. You probably don't need to replace the discs unless they're defective.

Buy a Haynes manual well worth the 10.

Please help don't know what to do about my car?

i have a 1998 Cadillac seville sls. the breaks have been squeaking and last week the car said engine oil level low. the car also said at that point that the engine oil life was at 23% today when i took the car in to a Midas it said 17% oil engine life. so they charged me 300 dollars on the receipt it says they did an oil change, replaced the air filter, changed brake pads, fuel induction service, and a brake flush. the second i drove off the parking lot my service engine light came on! this light has never came on since i have owned the car! and my engine oil life now says 16% which is lower than when i took it in! did they do something to my car at all? i don't know anything about cars im pregnant and my husband is nowhere around please tell me what to say or how to prove that they messed up.Please help don't know what to do about my car?Your premonition may be correct, they may not have done all the listed items. The second you drive your car from a shop and something doesn't seem right, drive it right back there and make them fix it or talk to their regional manager right away.

My wife is pregnant too and she relys on me for these things. I'm sorry you had to deal with this. Take a male friend who knows cars into the shop there and help you out. Good luck and hope it gets resolved. Please help don't know what to do about my car?they probly didnt reset oil life. check engine could be alot of thing.take it back. Please help don't know what to do about my car?You have to manually reset the service oil light. On many GMs, you turn the key to on (engine off), then floor the gas three times. That resets the oil reminder. A lot of mechanics just forget to reset it (or don't know how for every car).

As for the check engine light, tell them it came on as soon as you drove off the lot. Ask if they could just read the codes. A good manager would scan the codes for free. (All it takes is plugging in the reader and reading the codes.) It may or may not have anything to do with what they did.

I don't know if they messed up, but if I were to bet, I'd bet that they really did all they said they did. Please help don't know what to do about my car?Did they call you before they did all the work? They have to call you before they do anything ...service light could be something thing else it could happen any time....oil 16% that doesn't make sen should be 95% because you just got it change you should ask them ...why is 16% good luckPlease help don't know what to do about my car?Take it back to the same place and ask them,,,What the heyyy! They should be able to fix it or answer your questions. Please help don't know what to do about my car?Since modern vehicles have become increasingly complex over the years, the reason for a check engine light can also be quite complex. You should take the car to a name brand auto parts store and tell the person behind the counter that you want to have the OBD (On Board Diagnostics) code read for your car. Most of the larger chains will do this for free. Since your vehicle is a 1998, it most likely requires an OBD-II code scanner, but this should be irrelevant to anybody behind the counter. Once you know which code the check engine light has issued, you should be able to take the vehicle to an ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certified shop, and have the vehicle repaired properly. Note, that an ASE certified technician will run the code check as well, but it never hurts to know exactly what is wrong with the vehicle yourself before taking it any place to be repaired.

You will see this symbol on any automotive center that has received ASE certification: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:ASE_ce

I hope this helps, and good luck. Please help don't know what to do about my car?on that car you should have a reset button. every time you change the oil you have to set the reminder.

  • Squishy brake pedal after changing front brakes, how can I fix this?

I just changed the front brakes on my '01 Acura TL, but I've left the original pads on the rears and haven't bled the lines. My pedal feels squishy and when I start my car it can almost reach the floor before I give it a few pumps then it's fine again. Should I bleed the lines? Is there any other way to fix this without bleeding because I haven't done this before and I'm not sure how.

FYI I replaced the stock brakes with EBC brake pads.Squishy brake pedal after changing front brakes, how can I fix this?SOMETIMES WHEN YOU CHANGE THE BRAKES ON YOUR CAR, THE FIRST TIME YOU PUSH THE PEDAL DOWN AFTER CHANGING THEM IT WILL GO ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. IT'S BECAUSE YOU COMPRESSED THE CALIPER IN WHEN YOU CHANGED THEM.IT TAKES A FEW PUMPS TO PUMP THEM BACK OUT.

IF IT STILL DOES IT AFTER THAT YOU GOTTA BLEED THE AIR OUT OF THEM. JUST GET YOUR BUDDY TO SIT IN THE CAR AND PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL UNTIL IT'S TIGHT AND THEN HOLD IT TIGHT UNTIL YOU CRACK THE LINE.IF YOU GET AIR AND NO FLUID , REPEAT THE PROCESS UNTIL YOU GET NOTHING BUT FLUID.REPEAT FOR THE OTHER SIDE. USE A LINE WRENCH ON THE NUT ON THE BRAKE LINE WHERE IT GOES INTO YOUR CALIPER.

IF YOU STILL GOT A FUNKY PEDAL.CHANGE YOUR BACK BRAKES.YOU'D BE SUPRISED HOW THE BACK BRAKES AFFECT YOUR PEDAL, AND HOW YOUR CAR STOPS. EVEN THOUGH YOUR FRONT BRAKES DO MOST OF THE WORK.

GOOD LUCK!!Squishy brake pedal after changing front brakes, how can I fix this?If you get in an accident and it's found out that it was your fault, your insurance can deny coverage.

Pep Boys will change out ALL the fluid in the brakes for $49Squishy brake pedal after changing front brakes, how can I fix this?Air compresses, but brake fluid doesn't. Sounds like you need to bleed the brake lines.Squishy brake pedal after changing front brakes, how can I fix this? You will need to bleed your brakes, it sounds like you have some air in the lines. The same thing happened in my old car when we changed the rear brakes. I had the same feeling and we had to go back and bleed them. Once that was done they were fine. Bleeding the brakes is not too hard. I would google it or look on car forums. My boyfriend did it, and I sat in the car pumping the brakes for him while he did that. I know it wasn't too hard, but I could not see what he was doing to tell you exactly. It only took about 20 minutes until that part was all said and done.....Good luck!Squishy brake pedal after changing front brakes, how can I fix this?If you only changed the brake pads, you shouldn't have to bleed the brakes. You may have bad front calipers, the pistons may be forzen and not extending all the way out. You also may have frozen caliper slide pins and the caliper may not be able to move freely. Jack up the front end and have someone apply the brakes. Try spinning the front wheels by hand, if you can move them, inspect the caliper slide pins, make sure the pins allow the caliper to freely move in and out. If you did not open the brake lines (Bleeders) and you did not have this problem %26quot;Before%26quot; replacing your brake pads, I would suspect, incorrectly installed brake pads or bad brake calipers. I would need to know more information as to why you replaced brakes in the first place, in order to help you diagnose this condition. Also need to know if you ran the master cylinder low or opened the bleeders for any reason.Squishy brake pedal after changing front brakes, how can I fix this?bleed themSquishy brake pedal after changing front brakes, how can I fix this?I believe bleeding the brake lines is in order. u start with the longest brake line and end with the shortest to ensure that no bubbles are in your brake lines. pumping the brakes builds pressure in the lines and is why you get stopping power. it is essential to fix the problem ASAP! if you are involved in an accident, knowing of the problem makes you liable. also, i believe it is illegal to have a vehicle on the road with such problems and insurance will not cover. bleeding the lines is fairly easy and can be done in usually less than an hour. call auto parts store to ask for details.Squishy brake pedal after changing front brakes, how can I fix this? You got to bleed the lines if you have a squishy pedal. Get someone to help you do it. Start with the RR brake then LR, RF,LF. That will get all the air out of the system. Make sure you have plenty of brake fluid in the reservoir.Squishy brake pedal after changing front brakes, how can I fix this?you have air in your brakelines, you need to have them bled by someone who is familiar with brake work, usually it is better to have two people to do this job.Squishy brake pedal after changing front brakes, how can I fix this? You need to bleed your brakes. No way around it. You may want to see if you have any buddies who have done it before and have them come and help you. It is complex.Squishy brake pedal after changing front brakes, how can I fix this?you have to bleed the brakes, anytime the pedal acts like you say it does it has air in the lines.Squishy brake pedal after changing front brakes, how can I fix this?just changing pads, you shouldnt have air in the lines.ive changed alot of brakes, and i never bled the brakes.when you have to bleed brakes is when you break a line, change a wheel cylinder, break a hose or change a master cylinder.probably the reason your brakes are squishy is the pads are new and they got to get harden up for the rotors.drive it a while.now you probably will smell them, but thats ok,cause they are getting harden up.

2003 Odyssey brake caliper bolts keep spinning. HELP!?

I just changed the front brake pads on a 2003 Honda Odyssey. The pads are in and car brakes just fine. My concern is the two bolts holding caliper in place. When tightening them, it just keeps spinning.. 3/4 of the caliper bolts do this. If I pull the bolt out, I can pull the bolt they go into out as well.. I don't see how it stays in place because they don't have threads on them once they go in. Please help! I just want the family to be safe. How do you recalibrate the brake calipers on a 2003 Honda Accord?

I am trying to change the brakes on my car and I can't get the brake calipers to go back in so they can fit over my new pads. I have been trying to use a C clamp but it is not budging. Im not sure that they are like a %26quot;screw%26quot; needing to be screwed in. Do they rub against the pad? That is just strange.

If it is stuck with the C clamp, then you're not doing it right. The cylinder has to go in very straight otherwise it will get stuck.Clamp it in the middle, not the side. If you can't, use a small wood block as a crossmember with the C clamp.

I usually can get it in with a pair of plumbing tool. How do you recalibrate the brake calipers on a 2003 Honda Accord?front or rear? The rears need to be rotated in with a special tool. The front should go right in. If you push it in at an angle it can cock the piston and ruin the seal or piston. Be careful! I usually crack open the bleeder too as I don't want the fluid to go back up to the master cylinder or worse the abs unit. the fluid at the back of the pistone is usually the dirtiest fluid in the system as that is where most of the heat is. just my 2 cents. If it still won't go, the piston is seized and the caliper need to be replaced and re-bled.How do you recalibrate the brake calipers on a 2003 Honda Accord?Take the cap off your master brake reservoir, and see if that relives the back pressure. How do you recalibrate the brake calipers on a 2003 Honda Accord? In my experience a caliper that won't retract with a C clamp is defective. That's assuming you used one large enough for the job. If you had premature wear this is likely the case.

Make sure you use something such as the old pad, if there is enough left, to lay across the caliper to distribute pressure evenly. How do you recalibrate the brake calipers on a 2003 Honda Accord? This may sound rather remedial, but, have you opened the bleeder valve on the caliper? It is a small screw at the bottom of the caliper. How do you recalibrate the brake calipers on a 2003 Honda Accord?if this is the rear brakes you are working on you need a special tool to push in the piston.

  • 95 240sx s14 rear brake caliper piston problem?

I am in the process of changing the rear brake pads on my s14 and ran into a problem with the left rear caliper. I have the tool for turning the piston in the caliper and have changed the brakes on my s13 many times without any problems. This is the first time changing the pads on this car, and after replacing the pads on the passenger side, I encountered something new when i started on the left side. After spinning the piston clockwise to try and get it seated i found that it wasn't going anywhere. The dimples in the piston looked like the last owner did a number on them and the dust boot was all mangled and loose. Does anyone know how i can get the piston to seat back in? If i remove the piston will i have to bleed the system? by the way, i turned the piston about a quarter turn counter clockwise to see if it would move at all and it did move out a bit.

thanks.95 240sx s14 rear brake caliper piston problem?push and turn

Family business & choosing a major,. Please Help!?

Im a 19 year old sophomore female majoring in business at uni and got 2 more years to go. However,I feel like im wasting my time here and also not enjoying it though i know have an aptitude to study business and wanting to make it as my career. Its just that im so confused right now and having a hard time atm as im expected to acquire two types of degree at once which are the bachelor in business and automotive engineering and Im very much certain of myself that it would drive me insane and even now, im so worn out now just by thinking of this problematic idea which is mainly suggested by my dad whos the director in the family business at the moment.

I became to be involved in the family business focused on Automotive repair services for 3years , However ive kinda lost passion for it right now as im incapable of handling all the things happening in my current life and few weeks ago, when i was doing a work on the car, changing brake pads and I was totally out of concentration at that time, thinking about how to fix/overcome this problem and eventually this was led into a stupid mistake - Forgot to put the caliper back on the front-left side of tyre. Every employees there saw my mistake and made a fun of me indirectly by talking about me behind my back, treating me like i wont be able to do anything cuz im a female.I find working with guys in a male-dominated business hard enough as being an opposite gender.Anyways Ive done this work lot of time and this was my first time making a mistake on it. I understand the concept of workplace/society is harsh and that many people around you will act harsh on ya as they want to win over you and bring you down and so on. This being said I accepted my negligence though i felt hurt inside because of how this has been a 'hot' topic for few weeks. So in addition to this, I thought its rather better for me to switch my path to Automotive engineering as early as possible as so that i can upgrade my skills/technique to competitive level as my dads employees' and that I actually want to specialise in this business. In addition to this, if i ever want to study business in future, then ill go for a graduate certificate or graduate diploma in business which would take 6months to a year to complete as according to the info booklet provided by the uni im currently attending to and in regard to this, it is stated that you would be only studying the few papers based on what youve chosen.

I ll need to go to a polytechnic to major in automotive engineering because from where Im from which is NZ and as opposed to US where there are many many community colleges, universities, here in NZ there are only 7 universities and non of them offer automotive engineering courses, though they have engineering courses that require you a 4-5yrs of study and it involves many theoretical work but hardly practical work provided as you may already know of. This means that i ll need to switch into another tertiary education provider in which this does not matter to me at all, but dad thinks reputation is what matters the most so that i can get into big corporates but then at the same time he pursues that i should take over the family business hence i should know in depth about cars and business.

My question is that, does having a business degree itself gurantee you anything successful in future, does it really matter?Majority of yahoo answers regarding 'Is it worthing having a business degree?%26quot; seem to be too general as most of the answers are like %26quot; yes, you can earn $$$ a year, make yourself rich n you can work in the famous financial institutions around the world,, and of course you will be more recognised than those who dont have a degree%26quot;.It makes sense at some point but Ive heard this million times so,, I just want a different answer here as I need to make myself a decision based on the most reasonable justification and pursue my dream regardless of what the obstacles are.

My dad is the main person whom I have a trouble with and have argument with. Despite of this, I am a motivated person wanting to achieve in something and its not bad being in the family business but im just not certain how to solve the anxiety thats affecting my life at the moment.I just cannot understand the concept of majoring in two different types of subject at once, cuz i aint a production robot .Moreover this would mean I ll need to attend two different unis and it would double and triple the student loan i get.Its almost impossible and having a quality personal life is significant! Id rather go for one thing and let the other becomes the opportunity cost and just learn the business aspects in a real practice.

Do you think it is too late to switch the path?

your advice and opinions are kindly appreciated
