How much should I pay to have a mechanic change the my car's front brake pads?
I have already bought new break pads from someone, so I only should pay to have them changed. I live in Los Angeles by the way. Please give me an appoximate of what would be reasonable. I'm a student, low on cash.

just jack up a car with a floor jack then get under it and get crushed and or killed
seen them both make sure your partner uses jack stands which are pretty cheap
compared to your life, as for the brakes themselves simple to replace first off
you will need to open master cylinder if the fluid is low don't fill it generally low fluid means worn brakes unbolt calipers which is the housing that holds the pads in the housing is a piston with a rubber gasket you will be to get a piston
compressor tool or large pair of channel locks and compress the piston all the way back in other wise your going to be hard pressed to get new pads in as you compress the piston the fluid level should rise back to full mark brakes are a sealed system if there was a leak brakes won't work well brake pedal will just slowly hit the floor boards when compressing pistons use rags
on the channel locks teeth so you don't poke a hole in the gaskets around the pistons put the new pads in re bolt caliper do the same on the other side
when your doing the brakes you want to look at the rotor make sure its smooth also you can look at the old pads them selves if one pad is more worn
the the other the calipers may need replacing make sure you buy a can of brake cleaner that way you can wipe any grease off the rotors grease and brakes don't mix nor will you stop, also if your rotors have lots of grooves
they will need to be replaced its not totally critical but brakes will last half the time than normally, also check fluid level once both brakes are replaced top off if needed its not totally critical to replace worn calipers or rotors but the new pad won't last long if you don't as far as brakes its always best to replace worn out calipers ie uneven wear or bad rotors with lots of grooves
you can take your rotors in to be turned meaning that a shop or machine shop puts on a lath and cuts the grooves out the problem with this is heating and cooling also any hair line cracks replace the rotors they will fail you looking for discoloration etc make sure you use cleaner specific to brakes
otherwise it will leave a chemical film and you may not stop and also wear eye protection

Fisrtly, let the tension off the front wheel nuts (don't undo them completely, just loosen them), jack up the car, ensuring you have chocked the back wheels to stop it rolling back and crushing you to death, remove ONE FRONT WHEEL AT A TIME. Get yourself comfy, reach round the back of the caliper (where the pads go) and undo the allen bolt(s) holding it in place. The caliper should slide off pretty easily (note: just remembered - undo the lid of the brake fluid resoviour first of all to release the pressure!). With the caliper off, you should see a screw holding the rotor in place - undo this and slide the rotor off the hub. If it resists, give it a whack or 2. Put some anti-seize compound (coppaslip) on the new rotor where it joins the hub. Replace the screw(s). Prise the caliper apart (this is why you have to undo the lid on the fluid res first) and remove the pads, one at a time. Replace with new pads, after applying a thin coating of coppaslip to the back side - this will prevent %26quot;brake squeal%26quot;. (If you are an enthusiastic driver, I would suggest some %26quot;Green Stuff%26quot; pads). Re-fit caliper exactly how you took it off, and tighten the allen bolts to the correct torque. Replace road wheel and repeat on the other side.
Total time for the first time you do it yourself will be about 40 minutes. 3 YOU MUST replace the rotors I recommend that to all my customers. yes you can turn them but I find on trucks that they will warp easily and I only give an installation warranty I don't warrant against warped rotors on any truck/van
There are two TORX head bolt I am told are 40mm get a set of torx sockets.
4..with a large screwdriver or the caliper retract tool, I usually use a screwdriver, go between the pad and rotor of the inboard pad and pry the pad apart to the full extent it will go this is required before pulling the 2 bolts that take off the caliper, replace the rotor it pops right off and the pads watch those keepers as they prevent squeaking, If you get a tube of blue anti-squeal put it on the back of the pad not the face.
reassemble as you removed and do the other one. when you first start the truck press the brakes a couple of times to put pressure on the new pads and there you have it... We do this task in about an hour so plan on a first time 3 hours. My brother-in-law is convinced he needs an allen wrench to change the front brake pads on his car. The allen wrench is supposedly needed to remove a bracket that is holding the calipers in place. He thinks the calepers need to be removed to change brake pads.
